The average solider usually
carried the following: rucksack, gas mask, rifle, ammunition, grenades, boots,
a helmet or hat, Puttees (these were long pieces of cloth or fabric which they
wrapped around the upper halves of their boots and calves to keep out water and
dirt), canteen, socks, gloves, coat, shovel, bayonet, another small knife, and
a cape. Other soldiers carried machine guns, or they manned artillery.
